Dog Training
Train Your Dog
Probably the first training you will want to do with your new puppy is house training or house breaking. After this, you will be able to train your dog all sorts of things: the kind of behaviour you expect in the house, how to walk with you and come to you when called and lots of tricks. Training takes effort, patience, and above all, consistency.
A good starting point with dog training is to understand how dogs communicate. Once you understand this, you will have more understanding of how to get a message across to your dog.
House Training or House Breaking
This is probably what most dog owners want to first when their new puppy comes home. You should start the house training straight away, and do not let your puppy get into any bad habits. The best way to start toilet training is to take your puppy outside regularly, especially after eating and drinking and after waking up. Yound puppies physically can not hold on much longer than an hour, so going outside to go to the toilet regularly will help with this. When the puppy goes to the toilet outside, give it lots of praise immediately, so that it learns that this is good.
If you find the puppy going to the toilet in the house, make some kind of loud noise or other distraction, but make sure that the puppy does not associate this with you. If the puppy associates the noise with you rather than with its own actions, it will just start to go to the toilet when you are not there.
Behaviour Training
Dogs love routine, they like something that you do or say to mean the same thing every time you do it or say it. Therefore, when you are training your dog, or when using commands that you have trained your dog to understand, you must be consistent. Praise your dog for good behaviour, and distract it from bad behaviour. If your dog is doing something that you don't want it to do, make what you want it to do more interesting for the dog. To train your dog to walk with you, keep talking to the dog and encouraging it to do what you want. If the dog loses interest in you for even the shortest time when you are training it, it will lose interest in what you are trying to get it to learn.
