Owning a Dog
Dog Ownership
Dogs make great pets or new members of the family. They are loyal and loving, and love attention from you. Making the most of your dog takes a lot off effort and patience on your part. All dogs need exercise, how much depends on the breed, size and age of the dog. As well as this, most dogs need regular grooming, and all dogs need lots of time spent playing with them or just sitting and stroking them. This improves the bond between you and your dog.
Dog ownership is a long term committment, and before getting a dog or puppy, you should think about whether you are prepared for what this will entail over quite a few years.
Accomodating Your Dog
Dogs like to feel part of the 'pack', which can mean you or your family. Dogs that are left to live outside usually feel lonely, and will not be happy. You should have space in your house for the dog to live with you, and enough room somewhere for a bed big enough for the dog, as well as its food bowl and water bowl. To make sure that your dog is safe when you are not in the house, it is best to have your dog's bed in a room that you can close off when you are not there. The dog's room should have nothing in it that can cause any injuries to your dog, for example vases at low level where the dog might accidentally break them. Wherever you keep your dogs things, make sure that there is always access to the water bowl, and that you regularly change the water to make sure that there is always water available to your dog.
Exercise
Dogs need exercise. The amount of exercise required depends on the type, size and age of the dog, and you should find out how much exercise a particular type of dog requires before getting a dog. This means that you are going to have to go for walks every day, whatever the weather, to make sure that your dog stays fit and healthy. If you do not want to do this, then a dog is not for you.
Asthma and Allergies
If you suffer from an allergy or asthma, you should consult your doctor before getting a dog about the possible reactions that you may have. Asthma UK advise that it is probably best for Asthma sufferers not to have a dog, as dog hair or skin can induce asthma attacks or other respiratory problems.
