Dog Grooming
Benefits of Grooming Your Dog
Grooming your dog keeps its coat clean and free from tangles and matting. Grooming can also keep its coat healthy, and also makes it shinier because grooming stimulates the skin's blood supply. It also makes the bond between you and your dog stronger.
You should groom your dog regularly from a young age. This gets the dog used to being groomed, and will make it easier to groom your dog. Your dog will see grooming as a part of being stroked and bonding with you.
How to Groom a Dog
How you groom your dog depends on the type of dog you have. In general, dogs with long, thick coats require more grooming than dogs with shorter coats, and more frequent grooming on a daily basis will be required during the shedding season.
Dogs with long, shiny, silky coats, such as Setters and Spaniels, should be combed around once a week after a bath. Short haired dogs are mostly easy to groom, requiring brushing or combing around once a week, and for the smooth coated dogs, such as the Boxer of Whippet, a weekly groom with a grooming glove (available from our store) will be enough. Don't bath these dogs more frequently than every 4 to 6 months, as this will remove too much of the protective oils from the skin and coat. Dogs with curly coats, such as Poodles, should be clipped and bathed every couple of months. Wire coated dogs, such as most of the Terriers, require regular brushing every couple of days, and a bath every 3 months.
